The iPad mini 2 is flawless in so many ways. From a rich app catalog to the best design on the market, the mini 2's only real downfall is its price. If your pockets are deep you'll simply love it.

The new iPad mini 2 was, in 2013, Apple's next step in the smaller tablet wars - and with Google and Amazon stepping up their respective games, the Cupertino brand needed something that hit back with strength.
However, even with that landscape, we were still surprised when Apple announced the iPad mini 2 on stage, coming with things like the A7 chip under the hood and a 128GB iteration to satisfy those that crave a lot of HD action (although you're now stuck with 32GB maximum for the cheaper tablet).

M7 Chip
The addition of the M7 chip in the iPad mini 2 seems on the surface to be a little redundant, given you won't be doing much in the way of exercise with the mini strapped to your arm.

Screen:
The newer iPad mini comes with a Retina display. This offers a much higher resolution than the original iPad mini and it really tells. The screen is much sharper and brighter - it's one of the best tablet screens around. That's not to say that the original iPad mini's screen is rubbish. In fact it's decent. Video and pictures look good, it's when reading text that you'll wish for a higher resolution.
Processor:
The iPad mini comes with the iPad 2's A5 processor in tow. It's a little long in the tooth now but has no problem running apps. The newer iPad mini comes with the same processor as the iPhone 5S, the 64-bit A7. You'll find that 3D games, like Infinity Blade 3, offer more detail and 3D effects on the Retina screen of the new iPad mini. If you want to use heavy duty apps like 3D rendering and video/photo editing you may want to pick up the more expensive iPad mini, but if not the processor jump is less of an issue than the screen.
Camera:
The new iPad mini has a slightly better front and rear camera. You'll get better shots in lower light conditions with it.
Battery life:
Both iPad minis last about the same amount of time - 10 hours of constant use.
Cost:
This is the other big difference between the original iPad mini and the new one. The storage configurations now add a 128GB model: the Wi-Fi-only 16GB, 32GB, 64GB, and 128GB models cost $399, $499, $599, and $699, respectively. LTE-equipped versions, available in the US from AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, and T-Mobile, cost $129 more: $529 to a sky-high $829.

The iPad Mini has already been designed to truly do a lot of tasks equally as well as a larger-size iPad, and that Retina Display makes it a better e-reader, Web browser, and photo viewer. But its price seems to acknowledge its versatility. And, while it's $100 less than an iPad Air for the same specs and promised battery life, some people will inevitably consider paying up just for a physically larger screen on the Air, even at the same resolution.
